Lamb sausage with mint, feta, and garlic and dill garlic yogurt sauce

Lamb is possibly the perfect meat.

Wait, we need to back up a moment. You need to understand how far I have come from my days of being almost vegetarian.

For many years, the only meat I ate was chicken (with the occasional side of bacon). I even referred to it as the “holy bird.”

Greek salad with mixed greens and dill

Greek salad with greens and dill

It’s funny how the mind works.

I was all set to spend this weekend cooking up a grand meal inspired by last weekend’s trip to Dosa. Mind you, despite the brown skin, I have absolutely no skills when it comes to making Indian food. My mother is a wiz in the kitchen, but a poor teacher (in the kitchen — calculus was a whole different issue). Or maybe I’m just impatient. Or maybe (probably) both.

But then this NPR article provided me with another inspiration altogether. It’s only the pinnacle of the Belmont social calendar: the annual Greek festival!

Crostini with figs and Gorgonzola

This week has been a blur.

Although our friends from Boston left early Sunday, giving me enough time to indulge in a serious nap, work this week has been non-stop. It began long; it’s ending long. It began with a bang and will end with a whimper. There were intermittent periods of frenzy, followed by lengthy periods of ennui.

Cardamom, ginger, and anise ice cream

I’ve lived in San Francisco and the Bay Area for 10 years now — and yet I never tire of showing guests around.

It’s the thrill of seeing the Golden Gate Bridge in person for the first time. Of imitating Sean Connery and referring to Alcatraz as “The Rock.” Of marveling at the breathtaking views at every turn (and over every hill). And, of course, delighting in the mouthwatering mix of flavors in our wonderful city’s equally wonderful restaurants.

Two friends from Boston visited this past weekend during a road trip down the coast. They started in Seattle (with a quick detour into British Columbia) and finished up their journey down on the Peninsula with us. She’s been here many times before — in fact, she has twice lived in southern California — but it was his first time out here.
